Fed: Farm leaders worried at US trade demands

CANBERRA, Jan 11 AAP - Australian political and farming leaders expressed concern today
at a demand made on US President-elect George W. Bush to double subsidies for American
farmers.

The newly elected chairman of the American Farm Bureau Federation, Bob Stallman, called
this week for subsidies to rise to $US18 billion ($A32.46 billion) from $US9 billion.

The federation, America's largest farming organisation, said subsidies had to be increased
to counter assistance that European governments gave to their farmers.
