Fed: New movie classification tag aims to reduce confusion
CANBERRA, Dec 16 AAP - Film distributors will introduce a new advertising message forunclassified movies after research found just 20 per cent of viewers understood the previousmessage.
Distributors have previously added the tag "this film is yet to be classified" to movietrailers and ads pending a classification ruling from the Office of Film and LiteratureClassification (OFLC).
The new tag will be: "This film has advertising approval. Please check the classificationcloser to the release date."
Federal Attorney-General Daryl Williams today said the new message would be introducedfrom January, 2003.
A strict classification regime ensured no film, video or computer game could be distributedwithout OFLC classification, he said.
However, distributors can apply for an exemption to allow the movie or video to beadvertised pending classification.
Mr Williams said the previous exemption tag had been misunderstood by audiences whobelieved either the distributor had not lodged the movie or that the classification authoritieswere too busy to review it.
The OFLC also today launched a new website to provide better information on the classificationprocess. The site is www.oflc.gov.au
